Calcium Rich Foods
Calcium: the Builder of Bones & Teeth
Our body requires four essential nutrients for normal physiological functioning and which must be obtained from dietary sources since the body is unable to synthesize them. These are minerals, vitamins, fatty acids and amino acids. We need about 29 of the minerals, which also includes the most common chemical elements carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, potassium and sulfur, as well as iron, phosphorus, sodium, chlorine, magnesium, cobalt, copper, zinc, manganese, iodine, etc.
The most abundant mineral in our body though is calcium. Not only is is critical for the development & maintenance of strong bones & teeth, which have 99% of the body's calcium (which is thus the basic building block of our body’s structure), but it also helps in muscle contraction, nerve functioning, blood clotting and hormone as well as enzyme secretion.
It’s best to to avoid calcium supplements unless explicitly recommended by a medical practitioner and to eat foods that are natural sources of calcium, as that is the easiest to absorb and assimilate. And it is important to ensure there is no calcium deficiency, as that can cause weakness in bones & teeth resulting in osteoporosis, as well as chest pains, muscle cramps & spasm, wheezing, impaired intellectual capacity, depression, sleep difficulties, irritability, anxiety, fatigue, seizures, coarse hair, brittle nails, psoriasis, dry skin, chronic itching, tooth decay, cataracts, etc.. Now that is full body damage.
Calcium rich foods include cheese and yogurt, but if there is lactose intolerance then there are other foods high in calcium are dark leafy greens including turnips, as well as eggs, tofu, black mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, ragi flour, red rajma, dill, cinnamon, etc.
At Prakratik Living we are aware that it is difficult to keep track of calcium foods and unreasonable to expect you to know if there is a deficiency of calcium, until it’s too late.
